Cyprus Taking the “Great Digital Step”

During the event to mark the launch of the European eSkills for Jobs 2014, President Nicos Anastasiades pledged the Government’s determination to take the “great digital step.”

Anastasiades explained that information and communication technologies are the driving force of social and economic modernisation, and their use will contribute decisively to the relaunching of the economy, increasing of productivity and the effectiveness of promoting innovation in creating new jobs.

The President said that despite the economic crisis, technologies of information and communication present prospects that young people should embrace with more eagerness.

“The Government is determined to take the great digital step. With a plan and projects that are already underway, we are setting the Cyprus economy and society on a new course,” he stated.

Communications and Works Minister Marios Demetriades, meanwhile, said that technology and its skills can help handle the problems faced by the Civil Service and increase the chances of young people finding jobs.

He said that this particular campaign takes place at a time when unemployment is increasingly rising, and that its aim is to inform citizens of the opportunities provided by eSkills during everyday life and their careers.

Furthermore, Demetriades explained that the Communications and Work Ministry aims at implementing high-speed Internet networks throughout the island, digitally modernising the Government and providing for effective public electronic services that are accessible to all, thus increasing productivity.
